Mental Health First Aid Training for Adults who Interact with Youth is an evidence-based program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada aiming to improve mental health literacy and to provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in youth ages 12 to 24. Mental health problems often first develop during adolescence or early adulthood, with half of all mental disorders beginning by age 14, and 75% beginning by age 24. This interactive course is provided in a supportive group learning environment. Practical skills are taught using a model that is easy to remember and apply in real-life settings.
The early signs and symptoms of developing mental health problems will be different from the more established clinical profiles which are reflected later in life. The social, educational and family environments in which mental disorders occur in young people are also different from those later in life. Therefore, the information in this course is designed to be sensitive to the unique aspects of mental health problems in young people. It is meant to assist education professionals, health providers, parents and other adults in the identification of mental health problems and appropriate first aid intervention strategies. Specific topics include depression, anxiety, substance related issues, eating disorders, deliberate self-injury and more.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Mental Health First Aid Canada is a certification-based course. In order to acquire certification, attendees must participate in the course's activities and group discussion, must be present for the duration of the course and must complete the training in its entirely with the same group. Participants who miss more than 15 minutes of course content for any reason during the two days cannot make up missed time and will not be eligible for certification. If a participant misses more than the 15 minute limit, instructors are not able to offer at-home/make-up assignments and it is not possible to attend the missed piece(s) of the course at a later date with a different group. It is important that all participants are aware of this requirement, as no exceptions will be made. These are quality assurance measures put in place by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, who regulate the MHFA program and instructors are not at liberty to change these requirements. If a participant who is ineligible for certification due to missed time chooses to take the training in its entirety at a later time, no discount will apply to the registration fee.
